The Nephila maculata, also known as the golden orb weaver spider, is coming to Paxton Gate just in time for spooky season. While people often think of spiders as props in haunted houses, stars of cheesy 60’s horror films, or just general creepy-crawlies, they are so much more than that. This particular spider looks massive, and in the world of spiders it is, but what you might not notice right away is how delicate and graceful it can be. Not only that, but it is truly one of nature’s most accomplished artists and architects.
The golden orb weaver gets its name from the enormous web it spins, which has an unusual golden hue. In sunlight, the threads shimmer with an almost heavenly glow, adding a touch of magic to the tropical and subtropical landscapes of Asia and Australia where it lives. Not only is the web a natural work of art, but the silk is incredibly strong. In fact, scientists have studied it as a potential material even stronger than Kevlar. The idea of golden-threaded armor might sound like something out of The Lord of the Rings, but it could be a real-world possibility someday.
