Innovate Forward by Looking Back -The Effectiveness of Old School Education

Daniel Buck presents, "Innovate Forward by Looking Back - The Effectiveness of Old School Education" in the Human Progress and Flourishing Workshop. This event is free and open to all members of the NDSU community and the public. The workshop format includes a 40-minute presentation followed by audience Q&A. After the presentation, light food and refreshments will be served in the Challey School of Music Atrium.
What is this talk about?
Even as technological innovations challenge the American school, Daniel Buck makes the case that traditional pedagogy, classical education, and a liberal arts tradition remain the best means to prepare students for an uncertain future. Akin to a family dinner, the classroom remains a useful tradition, and to innovate past it will sweep away a valuable institution. Moreover, direct instruction, classic literature, and historical and scientific content knowledge are necessities for any students facing down the future, however uncertain it may be.
Who is Daniel Buck?
Daniel Buck is a policy and editorial associate at the Thomas B. Fordham Institute, former English teacher, and frequent author. His writing has appeared in various national publications including the Wall Street Journal and National Review Magazine as well as policy and academic journals such as National Affairs and Education Next. His first book is What Is Wrong with Our Schools? published through John Catt Educational.
What is the Human Progress and Flourishing Workshop?
The Human Progress and Flourishing Workshop invites internationally renowned scholars and speakers from across the country to present research and engage in discussion with the community. The series focuses on solutions and policies that contribute to opportunity, innovation, and individual and societal flourishing. The workshop is available as a one-credit course (BUSN 491/690) for undergraduate and graduate students. You do not need to be enrolled in the course to attend these events.
