About this Event
“There are, and always have been, those who cannot help but see that the world and its experiences are in the nature of a symbol, and that it really reflects something that lies hidden in the subject himself, in his own transubjective reality.”
— Carl Jung
This workshop invites participants into an exploration of symbol and imagination. We’ll begin with a guided meditation to enter the body and soften the thinking mind. Through breath, gentle awareness, and simple bilateral movements, the meditation is designed to activate both hemispheres of the brain and invite a receptive, imaginal state—creating physiological openness for symbolic material to emerge.
From this space, participants are guided to notice what symbol is present for them. It may be one that appears in daily life, a dream image, or something that arose in meditation. For others, a tarot or oracle card will be offered as a way for the unconscious to choose. Each person will briefly sketch or write down their symbol, just enough to hold it in awareness.
With the symbol alive, we turn to intuitive mark-making—a drawing practice that allows the image to move through the body and onto the page. This process is not about representation but about letting the symbol take shape through rhythm, gesture, and texture. Charcoal, pencil, watercolor, or collage can be used—whatever feels most resonant. The invitation is to release expectation and allow the symbol to draw itself through you.
Once the symbol has taken form, we meet it more directly through imaginal dialogue. In private journaling or spoken reflection, participants will treat the image as alive and autonomous. Prompts such as “What do you want me to know?”will support this unfolding.
Together, these practices create a flow: entering the imaginal body, discovering a personal symbol, giving it form through creative expression, and finally listening to its voice.
Kelsey is an artist and therapist trained in art therapy at Naropa University. She invites people to use their senses as a compass, trusting the wisdom that comes through the body and imagination.
Top Hat Supply for Journeys is an experimental art studio and nonprofit seeking to reconnect people with the creative spirit. We believe when we strengthen the creative in ourselves we create a world with more possibility for beauty and connection.
Please arrive at 6:00. We will begin promptly at 6:15 and will not be able to accommodate those arriving late as it will disrupt the guided meditation. No knowledge or experience with anything is necessary. This is a creative sanctuary and we hold space for people to just enjoy themselves and be playful in trying something new.
