This inland sand plain habitat created by glacial outwash is locally known as “the Desert” and covers 900 acres of conservation land with pitch pine-scrub oak barrens interspersed amidst oak-pine forest and wetlands. You will have the opportunity to witness an unusual diversity of habitats. You will observe pitch pine (Pinus rigida), red pine (Pinus resinosa), scrub oak (Quercus ilicifolia), black huckleberry (Gaylussacia baccata), lowbush blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium), and sundial lupine (Lupinus perennis)—the host plant for the endangered Karner blue butterfly—as well as clubmosses (Dendrolycopodium, Huperzia) and pinweed (Lechea).
