Turn photos into paintings in this all-skill-levels mixed media class!
About this Event

Turn photos into paintings in this all-skill-levels mixed media class. Using pen, ink, shape, pattern, and color we’ll go on a 3 hour tour of simple sketchbook, watercolor, and monoprinting techniques.

Gain a creative toolbox you can use as warmups to detailed drawings or for quickly capturing a memory on-the-go. Put it all together to create monoprint postcards using photos, ink, and watercolor. This is a great way to document and create your own souvenirs after travel or local touristing.

Who is this class for?

This is a sampler class of many techniques. All are beginner friendly. If you’re more experienced with drawing or watercolor you’ll walk away with the monoprinting technique and fresh inspiration for memory keeping.

Learning outcomes

  • Basic approach to capturing experiences and memories using shape, pattern, and color
  • Basics of monoprinting technique and ability to recreate the setup for additional sizes or for use directly in a sketchbook.
  • Playing with a variety of mixed media tools
  • Strategies for packing art supplies on-the-go and recommended tools

A wide variety of supplies will be provided for use in the class. Students will take home a micron drawing pen, monoprinting plate, the art they make, and a full supply list for shopping for their favorites. Bonus, both ARCH and Shasta offer a 15% discount on any supplies purchased on workshop day!

Tools you’ll play with

  • Drawing pens
  • Pointed nib ink pen
  • Water soluble pencils
  • Artist grade watercolors
  • Paint brushes
  • Ceramic watercolor palettes
  • A variety of art and watercolor papers

Transportation

ARCH is easily accessible by public transportation. The 22 Fillmore and 55 Dogpatch both stop two blocks away at 16th and Wisconsin. Public transit is recommended as parking in the area is mostly time restricted and may require you to leave the class to re-park your car.

Parking

Hourly parking is available surrounding the store and Jackson park. We recommend arriving in the neighborhood early to secure parking. Please look closely at surrounding parking signs to check the length of parking.

Food and Amenities

Unless your class or instructor notes otherwise, please do not open food and drinks in the store (water bottles are OK), please reach out if you need an exception or accommodation for dietary or medical needs. Food you have brought with you can be eaten on the benches outside the store. There are a number of local cafes and restaurants surrounding the store if you want to visit them during class break - here are some of our recommendations within walking distance:

JBs Place - Fast, casual diner, conveniently located across the street from ARCH.

Magic Donuts - Sourdough donuts and coffee.

Thee Parkside - Drinks and casual eats.

Louie’s Original - Burgers, fries, desserts, and more.

Wolfe’s Lunch - Diner fare and Japanese/Korean dishes.

Connecticut Yankee - Casual food and drinks.

ACCESSIBILITY

ARCH is wheelchair accessible, and has a public restroom. This class takes place out and about in the neighborhood near the store, so prepare for outdoor conditions. Please reach out [email protected] if you need any accessibility accommodation. Our store is kid and pet friendly, but they must be left at home during classes.

Photography Consent Notice

Photography, video, and arts and crafts occur at our store. All present at our classes are subject to photography, video, or artistic depiction. All are subject to ARCH photography being shared in marketing material, on our Instagram, website, etc.

Lastly, you will receive a coupon for 15% off at the store to be used on the day of the class, so don’t forget to take advantage of that!
