Injection Moulding: More than Just Composite Veneers
About this Event
Aims and Objectives
The aim of this course is to provide delegates with a practical and clinically relevant understanding of the composite injection moulding technique, including appropriate case selection, stent fabrication, clinical execution, common complications, limitations and long-term maintenance considerations.
By the end of the course, delegates will have been introduced to:
1. The clinical applications of composite injection moulding in restorative and cosmetic dentistry.
2. Appropriate case selection, including cases suitable for additive composite dentistry and cases where alternative treatment options may be more appropriate.
3. The principles of smile design, diagnostic planning and wax-up/mock-up workflows relevant to injection moulding.
4. The fabrication of the injection moulding stent, including the advantages and disadvantages of chairside fabrication versus laboratory-produced stents.
5. The clinical stages of the injection moulding procedure, including isolation, preparation, adhesive protocols, composite injection, curing, finishing and polishing.
6. Hands-on practical experience of using the stent and performing the composite injection moulding technique on a training model.
7. Common pitfalls, including poor case selection, inaccurate stent fabrication, inadequate isolation, air voids, excess flash, bonding failure, finishing errors and occlusal issues.
8. The limitations of the technique, including aesthetic, functional, material and longevity considerations.
9. Maintenance requirements, including polishing, repair, review protocols and management of staining, chipping or wear.
Learning Outcomes
Following completion of the course, delegates will be able to:
1. Describe the main clinical indications for composite injection moulding.
2. Identify suitable and unsuitable cases for the technique.
3. Explain the importance of diagnostic planning, wax-up design and stent accuracy.
4. Compare the benefits and drawbacks of self-fabricated versus laboratory-made injection moulding stents.
5. Outline the key clinical stages involved in carrying out the injection moulding procedure.
6. Demonstrate the basic practical steps of the technique on a training model.
7. Recognise common clinical and technical errors associated with the procedure.
8. Explain the limitations of composite injection moulding and when alternative restorative options may be preferable.
9. Advise patients appropriately regarding maintenance, longevity, repairability and review requirements following treatment.
