Inheritance/SHACK Closing Ceremony

What does it mean to be a “free” Black person in today’s iteration of Brooklyn?

We invite you to join us on Saturday, July 27th, for the closing ceremony of Inheritance/Shack, an exhibition that explores this profound question while reflecting on the inheritances we carry into this newfound freedom. The evening will feature a labyrinth walk led by artist Walis Johnson on the grounds of Weeksville. This contemplative journey will encourage participants to engage with these questions deeply, fostering a space for introspection and reflection.

Following the walk, we will convene for an in-depth conversation on the meaning of inheritance. Guests are encouraged to bring personal artifacts from home to share, enriching our dialogue with tangible connections to our collective and individual histories.

Our time together will culminate in a communal dinner and an art-making workshop, where participants from the Inheritance/Shack project will guide us in creating our own shacks. Join us for an evening of meaningful engagement, artistic expression, and community building.

About the Exhibition:

Inheritance/SHACK invites us to reflect on the meaning of inheritance. Drawing from the works of Beverly Buchanan this project explores how we, as Black people, build on the inheritances of the past, embrace the present, and nurture spaces of care, creativity, and transformational possibility.

Johnson's past projects have engaged New York City residents in dialogues about race, property, and history, using art as a catalyst for storytelling and community reflection. Inheritance/SHACK continues this tradition, deepening the conversation about inheritance and identity.
