About this Event

South Asia Institute welcomes world renown violinist Indradeep Ghosh and tabla player Yousuf Kerai for a special evening classical concert.
Indradeep Ghosh, violin; Titled as “Prince of Violin”, Indradeep Ghosh is one of the premier Indian classical violinists and a trailblazer for the Maihar Gharana. Indradeep is one of the few Indian Classical violinists to play a unique, custom made five-string violin and viola with eight sympathetic strings, modeled after the Norwegian Hardanger fiddle which gives a fuller tone and resonating effect. He is an "A" grade artist of All India Radio and performs regularly for National Radio and TV Channel in India, as well as tours extensively all over the world. He has to his credit many classical and fusion music albums. He is the only Indian violinist to release first-ever commercial viola (bass violin) album titled “Tribute to Miyan Tansen on Viola”. He has also contributed to the album, Melodic Intersect: One Vision, which won the Akademia Music Award. Yousuf Kerai, tabla; Yousuf hails from Karachi, Pakistan and learned to sing and play the harmonium at the age of eight under the tutelage of the late Master Babu Khan. At the age of sixteen, he was accepted as a student of the late tabla maestro Ustad Khursheed Hussain and has been playing tabla for the last 25 years. Yousuf founded Tarz Group, an ensemble of classically trained musicians, committed to helping young listeners delight in their South Asian musical heritage. Tarz Group held many live concerts in Karachi and Lahore. Yousuf most recently served as Associate Professor of Practice at Habib University in Karachi where he taught courses in mathematics and South Asian music. He was the Founding Director of the Center for South Asian Music at Habib University, offering a South Asian Music Minor, where students learn musical skills and take courses on music theory and history.
