Indra Jatra is a significant festival in Nepal that celebrates the Hindu god Indra, the king of heaven and god of rain, and his victory over demons. The festival also honors the Newar community of the Kathmandu Valley and is also known as Yenya Punhi, which translates to "birthday of the old city of Kathmandu".
The festival is also a time for community bonding and cultural expression. Families come together to share traditional food, exchange blessings, and enjoy the festive spirit.
The festival is celebrated in September and includes many events, such as:
Chariot processions: The festival's main attraction is a procession of the living goddess Kumari, Ganesh, and Bhairav through the streets.
Masked dances: Deities and demons perform masked dances.
Religious enactments: These include tableaus that honor Indra and enactments of Lord Vishnu's ten earthly incarnations.
Pole raising ceremony: The festival begins with a ceremony in front of a local temple.
Together and united we hope to carry on our mission to preserve our heritage in the faraway lands and strengthen our cultural roots to pass on to our future generations giving a meaningful representation. As what matters for us at the moment is "Representation" .
