About this Event

The Indigo Hour is how the Blue Room does happy hour: live music on the bandstand starting at five-thirty, the week left at the door. This week the horn belongs to Joseph Wakefield.

The R&J Playerz Band is a true family operation — the "R" is Rhonda Wakefield, who manages the outfit, and the "J" is Joseph, who fronts it on saxophone. His Kansas roots run deep: he picked up music as a schoolkid in Paola, found the saxophone after his family moved to Topeka, and spent his teenage years gigging with the band Black Velvet. Years later, a chance meeting with saxophonist Art Porter at Chicago's Cotton Club put the horn back in his hands for good. These days he works soprano, alto, and tenor — often in the same set.

If you were in the district for the Missouri Wine & Jazz Festival earlier this month, you may have caught them holding down the Sunday afternoon slot at 18th & Vine. Now they're back — this time inside the Blue Room, with a set of sax-led R&B and smooth-jazz favorites built for winding a week down.

Come early, grab a drink, and let the horn do the rest. Admission is $5; AJM members are free.

The Blue Room, 1600 E 18th St, Kansas City, MO 64108. Friday, July 31 at 5:30 pm.
