Cultural Insights:

• In Japanese textile traditions, indigo dyeing (aizome) was highly valued for samurai clothing, kimonos, and workwear, as the natural indigo had antibacterial and insect-repellent properties.
• Indigo artisans maintained vats that were passed down through generations, carefully nurturing them for decades or even centuries.
• This is the inspiration for the community vat we’ll be using during this program. An indigo vat is a large container filled with a fermented indigo dye solution, allowing fabric to be dipped, oxidized, and dyed. Unlike surface dyeing, indigo binds with fabric through multiple dips, creating richer and deeper tones over time.

Veronica Buitron is a Miami-based designer and educator specializing in natural dyes and sustainable textiles. She discovered her passion for natural dyes while pursuing her BFA at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and furthered her knowledge with the mentoring of Peruvian dyers. Since 2016, Veronica has taught natural dyeing workshops to artisans in Ecuador and textile enthusiasts in Miami. In March 2020, she released her first book, which focuses on native dye plants from her home country of Ecuador.

LOCATION | This activity takes place exclusively at Vizcaya Village, the estate’s historic farm village, and does not include access to the east side of the property where the Main House and gardens are located.

Each session offers a unique opportunity to create, connect, and cultivate wellness in a vibrant, supportive setting.

To promote inclusion for all, Vizcaya ensures that all community programs, after-hour and weekend events for locals, feature activities that are physically accessible to all visitors. While not all areas of the estate are wheelchair accessible, community programs are purposefully located in areas without stairs or that can be accessed via a ramp.
