IndigiVIBES Poster Art & Design by Ariel Akerlund
Artist Statement: For these posters, I wanted to completely avoid using specific cultural symbols and motifs (which often have protocols) in order to prevent flattening any performers distinct Nation or treating Indigeneity as a monolith. Instead, the posters center our knowledge and shared relationships to land and water, which have carried us through generations. I wanted to incorporate symbols from nature and also “scientific” style illustrations as a push back against the colonial narrative that Indigenous knowledge is only “spiritual” or “cultural.” Our ways of knowing are deeply scientific, grounded in observation, pattern, and care. I wanted to show that we are stewards of the land and water as we always have been and always will be.
With these posters I also wanted to show that Queerness within Indigeneity is not separate or central to our identity. It does not need constant naming or visibility to be “real.” It is not performed or explained. Queerness to us existed long before modern labels. Queerness is part of the whole. It is deeper, integral, natural and rooted in kinship, roles and responsibility living with land and water. It is less to us about being seen, and more to us about belonging.
