Indigenous People's Day Special: Roosevelt Island

The earliest known inhabitants of what we know today as Roosevelt Island were the Nacotchtank Indians, who were forced there in the 1660s. Archaeological evidence shows that the island was used by Native American tribes from prehistory until the early 18th century.

During the Civil War, the island was used as a training camp for the United States Colored Troops. The island was given to the federal government by the Theodore Roosevelt Association in memory of the 26th president. Until then, the island had been known as My Lord's Island, Barbadoes Island, Mason's Island, Analostan Island, and Anacostine Island. (wikipedia)

Please do not bring unregistered guests. It is unfair to your fellow birders on the waitlist and unfair to our volunteer guides. If you are on the Waitlist and have not received an email that a space has opened, unfortunately we're at capacity and can't add more to our flock for this walk.

CANCELLATION: The walk will proceed in rain (best time to bird!), but will be cancelled in the event of heavy downpours or thunderstorm; cancellation will be emailed at least 2 hours before meeting time. So please check before you head out.

WHAT TO BRING / PARK INFO:

• Sunscreen / Sun Protection
• Insect Repellant
• Comfortable footwear to walk or hike. We will be walking on unpaved trails.
• Water and snacks
• If you have binoculars, please bring them.
• Parking is limited at Roosevelt Island, arrive early to have the best chance for a spot. Parking is limited at Roosevelt Island. Alternatively, the Rosslyn Metro station is a 10-15 walk to the island. Please plan accordingly to meet us in the parking lot by 8AM.
• Portable restrooms are available on the island.
