The game was first published in 1984 by TSR, the renowned company behind Dungeons & Dragons, and was designed by Jeff Grubb. It allowed players to step into the boots of iconic heroes like Spider-Man and the X-Men within the sprawling Marvel Universe. Its greatest innovation was the brilliantly streamlined "FASERIP" system, named for the seven attributes that defined a character: Fighting, Agility, Strength, Endurance, Reason, Intuition, and Psyche. This system used a colorful Universal Table and percentile dice to resolve actions with results like "Amazing!" or "Fantastic!", perfectly capturing the four-color feel of comic books. A key feature was the Karma system, which rewarded heroic behavior by letting players spend points to influence dice rolls or save them to improve their characters, while penalizing unheroic acts like killing.
TSR supported the game with a vast library of content. The original 1984 "Basic" boxed set included the introductory adventure "Day of the Octopus," and was followed in 1986 by a more detailed "Advanced" edition. They published dozens of adventures, from street-level stories to the massive Secret Wars boxed set, and released comprehensive guides like the Gamer's Handbook of the Marvel Universe that provided stats for nearly every Marvel character. The game earned a reputation for being "rules light," focusing on fast-paced, creative action over complex simulation, which has contributed to its incredible longevity. A vibrant fan community keeps it alive today, creating new content and sharing their adventures.
