INDIANS & COWBOYS
by Michelle Thrush & Company
Directed by Michelle Thrush
Kookum magic, western myths, and history with a better punchline.
In this bold double bill using both stages at the Globe Theatre, award-winning Cree artist Michelle Thrush invites audiences on a journey that begins deep inside one life and ends by blowing up a century of bad storytelling.
Inner Elder is a hilarious and heartfelt solo performance bringing to life Thrush’s childhood in Alberta: a world where imagination is survival, trauma and comedy embrace, and spiritual grandmothers show up just in time. Blending raw memoir with affection and humour, Inner Elder is a love letter to resilience, community, and the elders – living and ancestral – who help us carry on.
Meanwhile, Indians & Cowboys takes dead aim at the Wild West itself. Using classic Hollywood western films, live music, and newly dubbed dialogue, Michelle Thrush and her collaborators flip the old “cowboys and Indians” narrative on its head, exposing stereotypes, reclaiming history, and turning a century of cinematic horse dung into pure comedy gold.
Together, Thrush’s creations form a powerful one-two theatrical punch: personal and political, intimate and universal, tender and outrageously funny. A night to laugh, grieve, pay tribute, and rewrite the story… beginning with who gets to tell it.
Inner Elder and Indians & Cowboys are presented as part of the Globe’s annual Spring Thaw Festival.
