In April 2024, India started a general election to fill 543 seats in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of parliament. The elections will last for six weeks and are set to be the largest ever held in the world, with over 960 million eligible voters, over 15 million election officers and over 2,500 political parties. Dr. Madhuparna Gupta will provide an overview of the world's largest democratic exercise and its key players, share her experience serving as an election officer in India’s West Bengal state and her insights on what this election means to Nova Scotia.
