Bridging the Gap Between SE and MBSE

Speaker 1: Lori Sisk

Abstract: As technical systems and the tools that design and manage them become more complex, the practice of using classical Systems Engineering (SE) to guide Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) tool usage is getting overlooked with the erroneous belief that the MBSE tools perform Systems Engineering “magically” within the tool, thus resulting in failures to meet project milestones, cost, and schedule with MBSE tool usage alone.

This presentation will discuss the evolution of classical SE translation into MBSE tools and detail the problems of not integrating proven classical SE best practices into complex MBSE tools suites thus creating a “Gap”.

Bio: Lori Sisk is a Senior Systems Engineer SME working for Gray Analytics in Huntsville, Alabama. She received her Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering in 1987 from Auburn University. Career highlights include: thermal analyst for NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope & STS ATLAS Missions; Sub-scale wind tunnel Test Engineer for NASA’s ASRM; Technical Liaison & OCONUS FSR manager for Weapon Watch systems; Manufacturing Manager for Rapid Prototyping, NASA Space Launch System (SLS) Vehicle Verification Compliance Lead & SLS Requirements SME for HOSC - NASA’s MSFC Golden Eagle & Honor award recipient; DPM/SE for Project Phoenix (full-scale wind tunnel); SE SME for Gray Analytics KV HWIL program. In her spare time, she enjoys painting and spending time with her family, especially her 2-year-old granddaughter.

Speaker 2: Ian Haubert

Bio: Ian Haubert is the Manager of Systems Engineering at Gray Analytics and holds a Master of Science degree in Systems Engineering from Johns Hopkins Whiting School of Engineering and a degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Arizona. He has broad experience in missile systems from supply, manufacturing, and hardware assembly to requirements, system architecture development, and integration and test. He is an expert user of MBSE tools such as Magic Draw/Cameo and IBM DOORS. Career highlights include building the first flight test guidance section for SM-3 IIA (CTV-1), developing WOSA compliant payload architectures, and architecting a flexible digital engineering ecosystem. During his time at Raytheon, he was awarded the Raytheon Tip of the Spear award and Up and Coming two years in a row. In his spare time, he spends time with his wife and two young boys, 4 and 2 years old, reading fantasy and sci-fi books, watching NFL football and college basketball.

As a classical SE best practice demonstration, we will focus on one of the most important aspects of classical Systems Engineering:

“How to Write Good Requirements and Verification Planning”

This tutorial is a reminder of how to use SE best practices that are needed for requirement inputs to MBSE tools. We will then show how these SE inputs should be modeled within MBSE tools to manage requirements.
