About this Event

Target Audience: All current and prospective PGR supervisors with priority given to BBSRC and MRC DTP supervisors in the first instance

Delivery Approach: The workshops are face to face, facilitated by Chrissy McCarthy, Constructing Equality Ltd who has extensive experience working with research organisations to promote inclusive practice. Jointly organised by the Wellcome ISSF EDI Project team, BBSRC DTP and FBMH Doctoral Academy

Workshop 1: Using EDI to Improve PGR Candidate Selection and Research Design

Date: Tuesday 27 September 2022, 09:00 – 13:00

Key Topics:

• Reflect on our current approach to PGR recruitment and project design

• Consider how our research might be impacted by prioritising some groups over others

• Explore what we can learn from excluded groups and how to engage them?

• Understand how to use EDI as a tool to identify knowledge gaps and take appropriate action

Workshop 2: Improving Inclusion within PhD Environment & Translational Research Approach

Date: Tuesday 11 October 2022, 09:00 – 13:00

Key Topics:

• Define inclusion and why it matters within the research environment

• Consider how we can foster inclusion with DTPs and Doctoral training more broadly

• Identify small yet impactful steps to take to improve the current system

• Consider bias in translation and what advantages we can gain by adopting an inclusive translational approach

Workshop 3: EDI Impact on Research Funding Decisions & Peer Review

Date: Wednesday 12 October 2022, 09:00 – 13:00

Key Topics - Inclusive Research Funding and Peer Review:

• Reflect on how current research decisions are made

• Consider your role in promoting inclusive research funding and peer review

• Identify actions that you can take to positively influence the wider research ecosystem.
