Incarnational Lens: Looking with Love in the Age of GenAI
About this Event
“Jesus looked at him with love.” — Mark 10:21
What is the connection between looking and loving? Do we look with love when creating and living out our vocation? And do we even need to look anymore when a single word prompt by GenAI can do it for us? Does the film camera—and the human eye—even matter anymore?
Join us for our next Art Forum as we explore "The Incarnational Lens," a provocative look at how filmmaking and creating art intersect with our faith. We'll be diving into the idea that cinema, creating media and art are all fundamentally an act of looking- and that our deep-seated desire to represent reality and beauty in our art, ultimately connects to the incarnation.
Beginning with the idea that cinema is fundamentally an act of looking, and that all mimetic arts hunger to reproduce reality, we will explore the role of the camera as a means to satisfy our innate desire to see reality in all of its fullness.
Is there a way that our way of looking, especially through lenses, can help us imitate the loving gaze of Jesus in our own time, bringing us closer to Him and to others?
At our next Art Forum, we’re talking about "The Incarnational Lens"—an honest look at how our faith intersects with the films and media we create and take in. As Christians, creating art is more than just a hobby or a career; it's an act of looking at the world with love, just like Jesus did.
To help us unpack this, we’re excited to welcome film director and writer Nathan Douglas, who is contributing to the short film pitch competition at the Napa Arts Festival, where catholics involved in the arts flock, such as Jonathan Roumie. Nathan is also regular contributor on Criteria: The Catholic Film Podcast. Read more of Nathan’s writing on the theology of film at The Vocation of Cinema (vocationofcinema.substack.com).
Whether you're a filmmaker, a digital creator, or just someone trying to navigate your faith in a tech-saturated world, come join us for this inspiring talk. We're tackling the big questions about art, authenticity, and how to reclaim a truly human, loving perspective in a world full of algorithms.
