Join us for Professor Emily Keddell's Inaugural Professorial Lecture titled " Alternative futures in child protection: with and beyond the state"About Professor Emily Keddell's research
Emily’s research examines the intersecting social inequities affecting the child protection system. Beneath this umbrella, she examines disparities for specific groups, decision-making, knowledge interpretation in practice, and the politics of state intervention in family life. She has a particular interest in the ethical implications of algorithmic tools used in child protection decision-making.
Current projects include prevention strategies to reduce care entry around the time of birth; examining reporting decisions made to statutory child protection agencies; and a study of collaborative decision-making between iwi/Māori community organisations and Oranga Tamariki. Her work prioritises whānau perspectives, and practitioner voices and experiences.
She is a founding member of the Reimagining Social Work blog, and is on the editorial collective for Aotearoa New Zealand Social Work. She co-founded the Social Justice and Child protection research network: Whatuka Rakahau mō te Tōkeke Pāpori me te Haumarutaka. Her work highlights issues of rights, equity and justice within child protection systems and how to address them.
This lecture will be followed with light refreshments, tea, coffee and juice.
