About Professor Neil Pickering's research:
Professor Neil Pickering is originally from the UK. He worked in bookshops and later for the Quakers before becoming interested in what we now call Bioethics. He received an MA in Philosophy and Health Care and then his PhD from University of Wales, Swansea. The topic of the PhD – later published as The Metaphor of Mental Illness (OUP 2005) – was a conceptual question about whether what was called mental illness was indeed the same concept of illness as applies to physical conditions. Neil came to the Otago University Bioethics Centre in 1999 with the encouragement of Professor Donald Evans (the then Director of the Centre). He has taught in most of the Centre’s postgraduate papers and in the MBChB and other Health Professional courses and has helped with the expansion of the Centre’s wider undergraduate programme. He has served on the Health Research Council Ethics Committee, and on the National Ethics Advisory Committee (NEAC) which he chaired for three years. He is Vice-President of the Australasian Association of Bioethics and Health Law. His research now centres on questions of decision-making competence and capacity, again with a focus on the concepts, about which there is a lively philosophical and ethical debate.
