About this Event
Freedom is not free. This Fourth of July marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of The Declaration of Independence. Founded by Gloria J. Browne-Marshall, Martyrs Day is the first national day of remembrance for American martyrs, a day to honor slain protesters and activists, and pay tribute to those whose untimely deaths led to protests for positive change in civil rights laws in the United States.
Join us for the Inaugural Martyrs Day National Event at the historic Riverside Church in New York City on Sunday, July 5, from 2:00–4:00 PM.
This special gathering will bring together community members, leaders, artists, and advocates for an afternoon of reflection, remembrance, and recommitment. The program will include:
• Panel discussion: “Martyrs, Memory, and Recommitment”

• Singing and musical selections
• Book signing
Attend in person at Riverside Church or join via livestream from anywhere in the country.
