About this Event

Inaugural lectures are typically staged in recognition of the appointment of University Chairs. They represent a significant milestone in the career of an academic, providing official recognition of their new role. The lecture offers an opportunity for the individual to showcase their academic achievements in research, innovation, engagement and further relevant activities, to a diverse audience comprising colleagues within higher education and related disciplines, as well as family, friends and the general public. Lecturers usually reflect upon their research, their career and what the future might hold. These events offer audiences the opportunity to hear from some of the world's most celebrated academics across a range of subjects.

Professor of Computer Science and Dean of the School of Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Computer Science, Professor Katie Atkinson, will deliver her Inaugural Lecture on Thursday 30th March 2023 at 5pm and will be followed by a networking reception.

The lecture was originally scheduled previously, but was cancelled due to the pandemic. The lecture will be the first of many lectures taking place in the School of Electrical Engineering, Electronics & Computer Science, as it recommences its inaugural lecture series.

Katie’s research is on the subject of computational models of argument, which is a topic within the general field of artificial intelligence. Professor Atkinson’s research is focused on AI and Law, specifically computational argumentation for modelling legal reasoning.

Katie is a member of the LawtechUK Panel, a government backed initiative to help transform the UK legal sector through technology and was President of the International Association for AI and Law in 2016 and 2017. Katie served on the Computer Science and Informatics sub-panel in the UK Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021.
