The Personal is Still Political: Towards a Trans-Inclusive Feminist Theology
About this Event

In this inaugural lecture, Professor Esther McIntosh draws on the feminist slogan ‘the personal is political’ as she explores the extent to which this phrase is still relevant today. Charting her career journey through a male-dominated academic field, she will reflect on the theological and ethical issues that inform her emphasis on equality and gender justice.

In contrast to the current views of ‘gender critical’ feminists, and contrary to the ambivalent and, at times, hostile position of mainstream Christianity towards queer folk, Esther will argue for the inherent compatibility of feminism and trans-inclusion and, hence, the necessity of developing an explicitly trans-inclusive feminist theology.

Biography:

Professor Esther McIntosh holds a BD (Hons) and PhD from the University of Aberdeen. She held a lectureship in Religion, Gender and Ethics at the University of Leeds until 2008, before joining York St John University where she has worked as Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Religion, Philosophy and Ethics, as well as Subject Director of Theology and Religious Studies. She was Managing Editor of the International Journal of Public Theology for eight years and currently serves on the editorial board of the book series ‘Political and Public Theologies’, as well as on the Executive Board of the Global Network for Public Theology. Her work is interdisciplinary and underpinned by a concern for gender justice. She is author of John Macmurray’s Religious Philosophy: What it Means to be a Person; editor of John Macmurray: Selected Philosophical Writings; and co-editor of Yours the Power: Faith-Based Organizing in the USA. She is also author of numerous book chapters and articles spanning philosophy of religion, theology and ethics. Her most recent publications include ‘The Persistence of White Christian Patriarchy in a Time of Right-Wing Populism’; ‘Blurring the Borders: Christian Women Negotiating Off- and Online Spaces of Feminism and Misogyny’; and ‘Gender in Religion, Religion in Society: The Agency and Identity of Christian Women’. She recently completed, with Dr Sharon Jagger, a two-year project exploring chaplaincy support for trans and non-binary staff and students at Anglican foundation universities, funded by the Church Universities Fund and York St John University.
