About this Event
This event will be in person and online
Books, Barbie and Biscuits
Join Anne-Marie as she reflects on three of the most important things in an academic’s life: books, Barbie, and biscuits. Anne-Marie will explore some of the key moments in her career by focusing on the idea of voice, and how women’s voices in particular have often been repressed or silenced. Thinking about how a range of literary texts have informed her thinking on widening participation, equality, and collaborative working, Anne-Marie will suggest some ways of thinking about the crucial role of higher education in the wider world. And she will also be talking about Barbie (and biscuits).
Wearing pink is encouraged.
Biography:
Anne-Marie Evans has worked at York St John since 2011, when she was appointed as a Lecturer in American Literature. Since then, she has worked as a Subject Director and Associate Head of English Literature before being appointed as the Head of School for Humanities in 2022.
Previously, she has worked at the University of Central Lancashire, the University of Huddersfield, and the University of Sheffield. Her research broadly focuses on American literature, women writers, and material culture. She has published on a wide range of topics including ‘femoir’ and celebrity autobiography, 1920s writing and flapper fashion, Mae West, zombies and speculative fiction, and Edith Wharton. She is currently involved in several different research projects, including one exploring the representation of First Ladies in literature and film. She has edited three collections of essays about literature, the most recent being Time, the City and the Literary Imagination (Palgrave 2021) where she contributed a chapter on Colson Whitehead’s novels and the concept of safe spaces in African American writing.
Anne-Marie has long been involved in widening participation work, and spent 15 years working as a Literature tutor for the Villiers Park Educational Trust in Cambridge, designing and delivering residential courses with the remit of encouraging young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to consider going to university. A former Fulbrighter (NYU Summer Institute, 2010), Anne-Marie spent 8 years as an elected member of the Fulbright Alumni Council, and worked on a number of national projects.
