Indie Bookstore Day is here! Join Books Are Magic for a special social justice themed storytime, centered on uplifting our community and treating everyone with respect and empathy. This storytime is led by acclaimed author Mona Damluji, author of Together and I Want You to Know.
Mona Damluji is an author and a mother who wears many hats! She loves to write books for children (and the adults who read with them) to inspire conversations about collective action and lived experiences of war and migration. Her poetry has been turned into two powerful picture books: (2021), illustrated by Innosanto Nagara—which Ibram X. Kendi said "offers a vision of the world we want for our children"—and (2025), illustrated by Ishtar Backlund Dakhil—which Safia Elhillo recognizes "found a way to explain war and diaspora to young readers with simultaneous clarity and gentleness, and enduring hope."
Mona works as a professor of film and media studies in California, writing and teaching about Arab cinema, oil culture, and creative-critical praxis. Outside of the classroom, Mona was part of the amazing team that produced the Peabody & Emmy nominated web series . She is also passionate about curating film and art exhibitions—like the traveling exhibition —as well as weekly poetry readings to lift up struggles for justice, liberation and Free Palestine.
