ABOUT ALL THE WORLD’S YOUR STAGE

This new children’s book by Folger Shakespeare Library Director Dr. Farah Karim-Cooper seeks to make the world of Shakespeare accessible—and interesting—to young readers.

The book opens with a biography of Shakespeare that weaves together the facts known about Shakespeare’s life with questions for young readers to consider, like “Do you need a university degree to be a talented writer?”

With playful, textured, and colorful illustrations created by Manjit Thapp, the book describes what life was like in Tudor London and then dives into the stories of eight of Shakespeare’s popular plays.

Romeo and Juliet

– Macbeth

– Hamlet

– A Midsummer Night’s Dream

– As You Like It

– Othello

– The Tempest

– The Merchant of Venice

Paired with each retelling is a topic related to the play—a discussion of witches to go with Macbeth and a history of fairies alongside A Midsummer Night’s Dream. All the World’s Your Stage is ideal for parents, caretakers, and teachers who want to introduce Shakespeare’s works and his world to young readers.

Dr. Farah Karim-Cooper is the eighth director of the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington DC. The Folger opened in 1932 as a home to the monumental collection of Shakespeare’s works and materials from the early modern world amassed by founders Henry and Emily Folger. Today, Dr. Karim-Cooper leads a staff of around 150 who continue to grow and care for the collection, provide opportunities for research and scholarship, program the Folger’s Elizabethan-style theatre, offer training and classes for educators and students, and operate museum galleries and a café. As the Folger approaches its second century, Dr. Karim-Cooper is positioning the organization as an international leader for practical applications of Shakespeare and the humanities in civic life.

Prior to joining the Folger, Dr. Karim-Cooper was Professor of Shakespeare Studies, King’s College London, and Director of Education (Higher Education & Research) at Shakespeare’s Globe, where she worked for 20 years. She has published over 40 chapters in books, reviews, and articles and served as a co-General Editor for Arden’s Shakespeare in the Theatre series and their Critical Intersections Series. Her book, The Great White Bard: Shakespeare, Race and the Future (2023) was voted top 100 books of 2023 by Time Magazine, NPR and The New Yorker. David Kilpatrick is the Director of Learning and Education Programs at the Folger Shakespeare Library, where he oversees educational resources and leads new efforts to enable teachers, young people, and the broader public to put Shakespeare and the humanities to use in addressing contemporary challenges.
