About this Event
This 6.5-hour training gives adults the skills they need to reach out and provide initial support to adolescents (ages 12-18) who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem and help connect them to the appropriate care. The course is designed for adults who regularly interact with adolescents (teachers, school staff, coaches, youth group leaders, parents, etc.) See the "Be The Difference" video featuring comedian Jeff Ross)
Youth Mental Health First Aid has two aims:
Teach adults who regularly interact with youth and young adults how to recognize and respond in a mental health or substance use emergency and how to offer support to a young person who appears to be in emotional distress. These adults can be parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, or other caring citizens.
By using Youth Mental Health First Aid, individuals coming into contact with youth and young adults can acquire the basic knowledge and skills to respond to a young person in distress. They will understand how to use a 5-step Mental Health First Aid Action Plan to help young people in crisis and non-crisis situations.
The Howell Township Municipal Alliance has been extremely supportive in our efforts to pursue providing these trainings in person. Please follow recommended COVID-19 regulations, respecting personal distance and mask recommendations.
