Youth Mental Health First Aid teaches adults who work with youth how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges among children and adolescents ages 12-18.
This training will be fully in-person on Tuesday, March 17th from 9am-4pm. In addition to the class itself on 3/17/26, there is a mandatory 2 hours of online prework that must be done before the class. (more details below).

WHAT MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID COVERS
- Common signs and symptoms of mental health challenges in this age group, including anxiety, depression, eating disorders and attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD)
- Common signs and symptoms of substance use challenges.
- How to interact with a child or adolescent in crisis.
- How to connect the youth with help.
- Expanded content on trauma, substance use, self-care and the impact of social media and bullying.
More Details/Requirements:
1) complete approximately 2 hours of pre-work virtually at your own pace DUE BEFORE the day of in-person training and
2) attend IN-PERSON group training at the Cannon Building in SLC on Tuesday March 17th (room 132) from 9am-4pm and
3) pass a simple exam to complete your certification in Youth Mental Health First Aid
Important Notes:
Lunch (on your own) will be from noon-12:45pm. There is a small cafeteria in the building and some nearby quick options that are driveable, but not walkable, within the time frame.
The in-person portion will be in a small group setting and include lecture style presentation, group activities, video clips, and some discussion.
To be certified you cannot miss more than 30 minutes total of the in-person portion.
There will be several short breaks throughout the day in addition to the lunch break.
Parking is free and accessible, restrooms and the cafeteria are very close to the room we will be in.
