Class Description: This beginner level series introduces the stitcher to some fundamental stitches in surface embroidery according to their "stitch family." Each class starts with three to four basic embroidery stitches and provides stitchers with the history of certain surface embroidery stitches, how to thread a needle, how to cast on and cast off, and how to personalize a design by understanding where particular stitches may be used in an embroidered design. In addition, stitchers will get a feel for how stitches are manipulated on the fabric.

Take one class or all of the classes in this series and create your own sampler of stitches to reference in future works.

Supplies: All materials will be provided to you in class.

About the Educator: Laura has been embroidering for 40+ years specializing in Surface Embroidery. She studied Fine Art at California State University East Bay, and embroidery with the Embroiderers Guild of America as well as San Francisco School of Needlework and Design. Her piece called “Balance” toured the United States and Canada as part of the 2 year Sixteenth National Exhibit with the Embroiderers Guild of America.

She has won numerous awards including “Best in Show” at the California State Fair in Sacramento. While Laura's first love is doing embroidery, her very close second is teaching embroidery. She loves bringing this ancient healing art to students while enjoying the beautiful and growing community at SFSNAD.
