This lecture explores new avenues of thought from
the points of view of Spanish agricultural innovation,
Iberian cultural diversity, and the artist’s brilliant
squaring of theology and science. The painting’s own
history is one marked by intrigue and suspense, from its
perilous transatlantic crossing in the early 1800s to its
serendipitous survival during a catastrophic house fire.
The painting has been captivating audiences and inspiring
contemporary artists since its arrival in the United States
in 1816.
