In-Person Author Talk: R. Sikoryak (Declaration/Emancipation Illustrated)

Join us at the 53rd Street Library on Saturday, July 11th at 4pm for a special in-person author talk surrounding America250! Cartoonist R. Sikoryak will be on hand to dicuss his new book, . This unique title features the unabridged text of the Declaration of Independence, alongside the Emancipation Proclamation and the Gettysburg Address in a double sided book, rendered in the bright, bold, and iconic styles of over 100 different American comics, cartoons, and graphic novels from over a century.
In a profusely illustrated talk, R. Sikoryak will show the development of his graphic novel: how it grew out of his previous book Constitution Illustrated, how he researched American history, and how he reinterpreted 100 years of American comics.
He’ll also do live drawings, demonstrating the variety of cartoon styles and characters he incorporated into the book.
We’ll also consider the ways the Declaration of Independence has been reinterpreted since 1776, how it directly inspired Lincoln, and how we’re still arguing about it today.
The talk will be followed by an interview and an audience Q and A.

Author bio: Cartoonist R. Sikoryak is also the author of , in addition to other titles. His comics and illustrations have appeared on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and on the covers of The New Yorker, The New York Times Book Review, Fortune, and The Nation. He drew the comic book stories in Tom Hanks’ novel .
Sikoryak teaches in the illustration department at Parsons School for Design and previously at The Center for Cartoon Studies. Since 1997, he's presented his live comics performance series, Carousel, around the United States and Canada. He lives in NYC with his spouse, Kriota Willberg.
