The advent of the 1868 Meiji Restoration in Japan catalyzed a series of social and political changes, which also impacted Japanese concepts surrounding visual and material culture. In this lecture, Sol Jung will examine how Japan responded to and translated Western concepts of “art” and “craft,” and the development of kōgei (工芸; “traditional arts and crafts”) in the Meiji era (1868 - 1912), with a focus on the technical sophistication involved in the creation of ornately decorated ceramics, cloisonné and lacquerware.
