About this Event

Join us for a fantastic evening with Lewis Hancox in-conversation with Char Binns of Homotopia, as we hear all about Lewis' debut graphic novel, Welcome To St Hell: My Trans Teen Misadventure.

Candid writing, playful artwork, and a riotous and fearlessly real story of figuring out that you’re trans- this book will bring hope and comfort to so many.’ -Alice Oseman

'…A brilliant memoir…Lewis has achieved an admirable mix of humor, race, and vulnerability for telling his own story now that he has some distance, and he is living in the promise that it does (hopefully) get far better than our teen selves could dream.’ -Booklist

Welcome To St Hell: My Trans Teen Misadventure

Lewis has a few things to say to his younger teen self.

He knows she hates her body.

He knows she's confused about who to snog.

He knows she's really a he and will ultimately realize this...

But she's going to go through a whole lot of mess (some of it funny,

some of it not funny at all) to get to that point. Lewis is trying to tell her this ... but she's refusing to listen.

Welcome to St Hell is the ground-breaking YA graphic memoir about being a trans teen, by brilliant filmmaker, illustrator and bold new voice in comics, Lewis Hancox. With both YA and adult appeal, Welcome to St Hell takes readers on Lew’s hilarious, heartbreaking and ultimately healing path as he overcomes trauma, confusion and dubious fashion choices to become the man he was always meant to be.

Welcome to St Hell is such an important and moving book that will resonate not just with trans teens, but with every young person who has ever felt the awkward sting of finding their identity in adolescence.

Lewis Hancox is a trans influencer, filmmaker, author and illustrator from the northwest UK. As well as being an inspirational voice, having appeared in TV programmes and creating original content documenting his experiences as a trans man, he has earned a huge online following thanks to his viral comedy videos. Entertaining people, while incidentally educating, is an important theme in his work.

Char Binns (she/her) is an activist, arts leader and writer. She is Festival Director at Homotopia, the UK’s longest running LGBTQIA arts and cultural festival. Char’s interest in people led her to study sociology and anthropology and she has an MA from SOAS, University of London. Randomly, she’s also an England Athletics qualified Coach and enjoys running a very long way. Char’s favourite things include outdoor adventures, live theatre, non-fiction books, oolong tea and her fur baby, Penny-Flo the whippet.
