Originally from Zaragoza, Spain, Jess Castellote arrived in Nigeria in 1984 as a young architecture graduate. After working for several years as an architect and project manager, he pursued a doctoral degree in Art History at UNED (Madrid). In 2019, he assumed the role of the inaugural Director of the Yemisi Shyllon Museum of Art (YSMA) at Pan-Atlantic University in Lagos. In this capacity, he played a crucial role in assembling and leading the museum team, defining its core mission, and establishing the governance structures and policies that have shaped this pioneering university museum on the African continent. He also served on the Advisory Board of Art X Lagos, demonstrating his deep commitment to the art world in Nigeria. In addition to his administrative roles, Castellote has made significant contributions to the field of Nigerian Art, having authored, co-authored, or edited five books on the subject, including "Collecting Art: A Manual for Collectors," co-authored with Professor Fabian Ajogwu. Another book is due to be published later this year. He integrates his professional endeavors as a museum director with his passionate involvement in various not-for-profit organizations dedicated to advancing development, nurturing talent, and engaging in educational projects within Nigeria.
