About this Event
Lee Hawkins, author of " I Am Nobody's Slave: How Uncovering My Family's History Set Me Free" and a 2022 finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for work at the Wall Street Journal, will discuss his book at an event co-sponsored by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and the National Association of Black Journalists Milwaukee chapter. The event will take place at ThriveOn King in historic Bronzeville. Hawkins will be joined by the Journal Sentinel's James Causey and Tannette Elie, president of NABJ-Milwaukee, for a conversation about his book. It tells the story of his family's pursuit of the American Dream while grappling with the impacts of systemic racism and racial violence. To their suburban Minnesotan neighbors, the Hawkins family appeared to be the ideal American family, embodying strength and success. However, behind closed doors, they struggled with the legacy of enslavement and apartheid.
