About this Event
St Edmund Hall warmly invites you to join us in welcoming Dr Emily Rutherford, M.G. Brock Junior Research Fellow in History, to discuss her research into LGBTQIA+ histories of the early twentieth century. Hosted in the Doctorow Hall, the talk will be followed by a Q&A session with Dr Rutherford.
'Historians Will Say They Were Just Good Friends': University Histories, Queer Histories
Popular engagement with queer history on social media often counterposes 'historians' who seek to obscure evidence of queerness in the past against queer people who seek to reveal evidence of historical queer people. But what *is* the purpose of queer history? Do historical actors' lives always resemble our own? Can friendship be queer, too? This talk offers one way through these questions by telling the life stories of three women academics and university administrators who worked at the University of Birmingham in the early twentieth century. It's a story of love, loss, chosen family, what universities are for, and the many meanings that historians, but also all of us, might make of the queer past.
All are welcome to attend - please get in touch if you have any questions.
There will be photography, videography, and social media at the event. If you do not wish to appear in any of the photos, please contact a member of staff to let them know.
