About this Event

The ON NEIHR,WIIH, and OISE Critical Health and Social Action Lab present guest speaker Dr. Clive Aspin (Ngāti Maru, Ngāti Whanaunga, Ngāti Tamaterā) who will discuss their research on Māori experiences of pandemics. Please join us this July 30, 2024 for the hybrid event held at Waakebiness Institute for Indigenous Health and on Zoom. A light breakfast will be provided for those who attend in person.

Dr. Clive Aspin is a Māori (Indigenous) researcher who has lived experience of multiple pandemics, including those caused by HIV, Covid-19, and poor mental health. Drawing on lessons learned from past and present pandemics, this talk will identify and discuss Indigenous-centred approaches to overcome the likely challenges posed by future pandemics.

Dr Aspin is an Associate Professor of Health at Te Herenga Waka, Victoria University of Wellington, Aotearoa. He has worked on HIV-related issues since the beginning of the HIV pandemic and has long-standing research collaborations with indigenous Canadian colleagues. His current research focuses on rangatahi (youth) suicide in Aotearoa where rates of suicide of young Māori are among the highest in the world.

Dr Aspin has been awarded a Winston Churchill Memorial Fellowship to learn about indigenous youth suicide interventions in Canada.
