About this Event
Multimedia artist Lu Yang joins Wu Hung, Harrie A. Vanderstappen Distinguished Service Professor of Art History at the University of Chicago, for a public conversation celebrating Lu Yang’s participation in at the Smart Museum of Art. Working across video, gaming technologies, animation, and installation, Lu Yang engages questions of gender, neuroscience, religion, and the body through the visual languages of digital culture and Japanese manga. The conversation will explore how artistic practice and art history intersect in shaping new narratives of Chinese art in a global context.

"Lu Yang & Wu Hung on the Artist's Work" is part of the Lu Yang’s short-term residency period at UChicago, sponsored by the . In conjunction with Beyond Boundaries, the Center for the Art of East Asia (CAEA) will also co-sponsor a panel conversation with Lu Yang alongside Xin Wang (Curatorial Director, PACE Gallery), Dr. Leslie Kay (Professor of Psychology & Neuroscience, The University of Chicago), and Rodica-Livia Monnet (Full Professor, Université de Montréal). The event will take place at the Cochrane-Woods Art Center, Room 157, from 4:00–5:30 PM.
ABOUT LU YANG
Working across video, gaming technologies, animation, and installation, Lu Yang explores questions of gender, biology, neuroscience, and religion through visual languages drawn from digital culture and Japanese manga. Recent solo exhibitions include: MUDEC, Milan; FACT, Liverpool; Oi! Street Art Space, Hong Kong; Kunsthalle Basel; Vellum LA, Los Angeles; Zabludowicz Collection, London; PalaisPopulaire, Berlin; Mori Art Museum, Tokyo; Freespace, Hong Kong; Panetteria Atomica, Rome; Jane Lombard Gallery, New York; COMA Gallery, Sydney; M WOODS, Beijing; and Société, Berlin. His work has been included in group shows at MEET, Milan; Rubin Museum of Art, New York; Zeppelin Museum, Friedrichshafen; Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh; Centre Pompidou-Metz; Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin; and the 59th Venice Biennale.
