About this Event

Louisa Bello - Louisa Bello is a British Nigerian humanitarian, English teacher, aunt, friend, and devoted Nina Simone worshipper. Raised in south London and now based in Brighton, she lives with her fur baby, Bella, and is widely known for her Be Kind mantra-alongside an enduring hatred of snakes and the word moist. She holds a First-Class degree in Creative Writing from Birkbeck, University of London, and a master’s in creative writing from Goldsmiths. For several years, Louisa led successful creative writing workshops for Africa Writes at the British Library and served as a trustee for the charity Pelican Post, organising author book signings at Camp Bestival.

Where The Shadows End - Sam, a 45-year-old Londoner of dual heritage, has lived his life accompanied by voices no one else can hear. Chief among them is the taunting echo of a childhood bully who refuses to let Sam forget the guilt he carries over his mother’s death. When his elusive, dream-like girlfriend, known only as Boat Woman, disappears without warning, Sam’s fragile world begins to unravel, and he becomes convinced that only his death can protect those he loves.

As the past and present collide in Sam’s fractured mind, he is drawn into a labyrinth of memory and revelation that challenges everything he thought he knew. But the voices that haunt him may yet become his guides, if he can only find the courage to listen. Luminous, unsettling and tender, Where the Shadows End is a powerful meditation on self-acceptance, the nature of guilt and the need to belong.

"In Conversation" has grown into a remarkable event series at Afrori Books. Whether it’s a lively auditorium filled with hundreds or a cosy, intimate setting, these events offer a chance to engage with some of the brightest established and emerging authors and creatives from around the globe. These are one-of-a-kind opportunities to hear personal stories and experiences, shared with honesty and openness. At Afrori Books, we’re committed to providing a safe space for Black creatives to tell their stories in their own voices. We’d love for you to join the conversation.
