About this Event

We are delighted to host two distinct visual arts exhibitions the shed light on local diverse communities at this year's Edinburgh Multicultural Festival. Join us at Edinburgh College (Granton Campus) between 13:00 and 20:00 on 8th and 9th October 2022 to discover unique perspectives on diversity captured in the work of photographer Hermann Rodrigues and an artist-led initiative Distanced Assemblage.

BroonScots: Portraits by Hermann Rodrigues

Growing up in the alleyways of Jaipur, Rajasthan. The photographer and documenter, Hermann Rodrigues found himself moving to the City of Edinburgh some 30 years ago. While he still tunes himself to the music of Northwest India, his passion for photography drives him to the plethora of South-Asian cultures practised here in Scotland. His prolific character of positivity, and an eye for the interesting has helped him amass more than 50,000 photographs of cross-culturing Asian personalities in this country.

He says his travels around Scotland empowered his self-started project of capturing the Scottish influence on Asian cultures. His work has been published and exhibited in many venues including Commonwealth Institute in London, the National Museums of Scotland, the National Libraries of Scotland and has been featured in many publications including The Times of India, BBC and the Wall Street Journal. And, not so long ago with Bashabi Fraser, CBE in a joint publication of photos and poems on migration and diaspora in 'Ragas & Reels' (Edinburgh: Luath Press, 2012).

Alternative Tracks by Distanced Assemblage

Facilitated by Distanced Assemblage (artists Paria Goodarzi and Francisco Llinás), Alternative Tracks is a friendly, welcoming space to meet neighbouring communities, members of the arts industry, political representatives, and new local people in different locations in Edinburgh. The project started in Haymarket in May, moving to Pilton over the summer.

This exhibition brings together work made by all participants to date, exploring Edinburgh’s urban space and the groups’ stories of migration. These textile pieces were made using different printmaking techniques, including screen printing, block printing, cyanotype and linocut. Assembled as a temporary installation within Edinburgh College, they embody different perspectives and conversations, while holding space for seldom heard voices within the public realm.

Developed as part of Edinburgh Printmakers' programme In from the Margins, in partnership with The Welcoming. Additional support provided by North Edinburgh Arts.

Alternative Tracks has been awarded funding from City of Edinburgh Council's Flexible Fund (Diversity & Inclusion). Made possible with the support of the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union.

Distanced Assemblage is a collaborative, artist-led initiative based in Scotland with the goal to make a positive impact in the wellbeing and visibility of people from diverse cultural and social backgrounds by providing opportunities to engage in art making.
