This year’s ImPulsTanz – Vienna International Dance Festival opens on 11 July from 20:00 with free admission with four participatory installations by the US-American choreographer and artist William Forsythe at MAK – Museum of Applied Arts. City of Abstracts (2001) Nowhere and Everywhere at the Same Time Nr. 2 (2013) Putting one foot in front of the other (2019) and Attempt to walk without a rhythm (2023) with the help of a floating pendulum field allow us to experience on our own bodies how we organise our environment and are organised by it. The installations at MAK can be explored by visitors from the start of the festival on 11 July until 18 August during the MAK opening hours.

For the performance opening at Burgtheater the great William Kentridge stages an artistic spiritual and political adventure with The Great Yes The Great No. Star choreographer Dada Masilo brings William Shakespeare’s most eloquent work HAMLET to the stage in a firework display of dance to live music. Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and Radouan Mriziga ask “Are there still four seasons?” to music by Antonio Vivaldi in times of climate crisis. In Foreshadow Alexander Vantournhout explores what is still physically possible in a highly acrobatic way. KIM Sungyong and the Korea National Contemporary Dance Company perform JUNGLE – an attempt to push dance to an intensity that touches on all aspects of existence. Jérôme Bel & Estelle Zhong Mengual show historical and contemporary connections between stage dance and non-human life. Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui’s three solos accompanied by three live musicians deal with incisive events in his dancers’ home countries. And things get “Olympic“ with Wim Vandekeybus and Ultima Vez who understand the goings-on of the ancient gods as extreme forms of our human highs and lows.

ImPulsTanz Classics and new faces

Deva Schubert is joining the programme for the first time opening this year’s [8:tension] Young Choreographers’ Series and transforming the mumok into a dancing body of sound and lamentation with her Glitch Choir. Eszter Salamon can also be seen there with a new version of Dance for Nothing (revisited) – her homage to John Cage returned as an ImPulsTanz Classic. Davi Pontes & Wallace Ferreira also return here with the winning piece of the ImPulsTanz – Young Choreographers’ Award 2022 and complete their trilogy on dance as black self-defence with Repertório N3. And in his solo Sister or He Buried the Body Trajal Harrell speculates on the relationship between Butoh legend Tatsumi Hijikata and one of the great African-American choreographers Katherine Dunham. He also performs the legendary ImPulsTanz Classic (M)imosa at the Odeon together with Cecilia Bengolea François Chaignaud and Marlene Monteiro Freitas.
