Improvising Care: Music, Relationships and the Art of Making Things Possible
Tia DeNora and Raymond MacDonald
Gilbert Scott Building - Room 255 (Humanity LT)
What might improvisation teach us about care, and what might care teach us about improvisation?
In this special GIOFest discussion, Tia DeNora and Raymond MacDonald explore the relationship between music, improvisation and care through two different but connected musical worlds: the Care for Music project, which examined what happens when music becomes part of everyday life in residential care for older people, and the ongoing practice of Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra.
Drawing on stories, musical encounters and their own research and practice, Tia and Raymond consider how music can create possibilities for pleasure, meaning, beauty, connection and relationships. They explore care itself as a kind of improvisational practice, one that depends upon listening, attunement, responsiveness and an openness to what might happen next.
The discussion also turns this question around: can improvisation itself be a form of care? In making space for others, responding to difference and finding ways to act together without knowing in advance where things will lead, improvisation offers ways of thinking about how relationships are made and sustained.
An informal conversation about music, care and collective life, and about improvisation as an art of making things possible.
