About Pedro:
Pedro Alvarez is an independent composer, performer, improviser and activist born in Chile in 1980, and currently based on Whadjuk Noongar land in Western Australia. His musical practice spans from Andean folk traditions through chamber music to experimental free improvisation, informed by anti-colonial perspectives, critical theory, and poetry.
Between 2010-2014, a doctoral scholarship allowed Alvarez to concentrate exclusively on his creative work while living in the UK, completing a Master of Philosophy at University of London, and a PhD guided by Liza Lim at University of Huddersfield. Later professional highlights include being appointed composer-in-residence in Vienna and in Mexico, serving as a peer in various Australia Council funding panels, lecturing in music at several universities in Chile and Australia, and receiving commissions from festivals and ensembles around the world. In addition to his musical practice, Alvarez currently works in community mental health for a non-for-profit organisation in Perth. You can find more information at http://www.pedroalvarez.info
