Learn to incorporate patterns and games into long form improv montages, and build a cohesive piece from scratch.
About this Event

Patterns help us collaborate. Spontaneous group acceptance/collaboration impresses an audience more than individual cleverness. Pattern work rewards an audience for paying attention and enforces the idea that the show was made especially for them.

In our third level, we explore creating patterns and discovering games to propel your scenes forward. You'll get out of your head and into the show by focusing on your team and what they need..

Dates: The class runs Sundays from 01/11/2026 to 03/01/2026, starting 01/11/2026 and running for 8 weeks.

A showcase will be scheduled as an additional opportunity on an evening during the week of March 8.

Instructor: Donnie Hoover

Donnie Hoover has been studying and performing improv for 10 years, and at the Coalition Theater since 2022. He previously performed at the Coalition on the house team Do Crimes, and currently does... a lot of random things at the theater including the monthly(ish) special Can't Hardly Date. Prior to moving to Richmond and joining the Coalition, Donnie studied and performed at the People's Improv Theater in NYC. Everyone who meets Donnie tells him it is obvious he's a middle child. He is incredibly excited to be teaching this 301 course to practice patterns and game!

Prerequisites: Improv 101 and 201, or equivalent classes at a comparable institution. Email [email protected] with questions.

Cost: $250 (Early Bird: $220)

The Coalition Theater is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Once classes begin, all sales are final.
