Impromptu Sound Concert (Part B) 21st & 22nd September
This is a concert of improvisation with known musical instruments and sound instrument sculptures. Happening on 21st and 22nd of September 2024 in the Myymälä2 Gallery, Uudenmaankatu 23 F from Klo- 18:00 to 20:00.
In correlation with the concert of 18th and 19th of September at Luckan Helsingfors, this event will be filled with a kaleidoscope of sound exchange from musicians who have explored myriad genres in their respective fields of prowess.
Sound in its pristine nature is an authentic form of communication before verbal linguistics got refined into schools of categories. This is an approach where sound can be enjoyed unlearned, away from the scholastic path and with experimentation. A search for a more diagonal approach towards sound, meaning – that has organic asymmetry devoid of influences; and yet treating inspiration to explore by experiencing what resonates in the already existing vocabulary of sound.
The background of this idea evolved from the ongoing project of Suva, called “Reconstruction of Cumulated Sound forms” for which he received a one-year artist working grant from Suomen Kulttuurihasto. The process of building what he calls as Sound instrument sculptures out of recycled materials and instruments also involves improvised interactions with respective artists whom he had never performed before and those whom he had been collaborating with, numerous festivals and events.
21st September – Eero Savela on Trumpet, Laura Mehmeti on Accordion, Kristine Tukre on Kokle and Suva on Quiddity.
22n September – Sami Sippola on Tenor Saxophone, Ville Rauhala on Contrabass, Affe Forsman on Drums, Eero Savela on trumpet and Suva on Ruminative sound form.
Laura Mehmeti began her accordion studies with Sylvain Tissot in the Broye region. She graduated from the Hochschule für Musik in Lucerne in the class of Anne-Maria Hölscher and continued her studies at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki in the class of Veli Kujala. She enjoys exploring different aspects and repertoires of instrumental music, both as a soloist and as part of an ensemble, such as the Latenz ensemble in which she has played since 2020. Laura is very curious and is always on the lookout for new experiences to share with audiences at concerts.

Affe Forsman is a legendary rock and jazz drummer who has worked a lot in the field of free jazz since the 1970s. Affe’s background as a teacher of the Aleksander technique also provided a basis for discussions and how to release the body and mind in a playing situation. An effort was made to keep extra thinking in the background, so that the sounds could be ignited without value loading and pushing in any direction. In the early days he worked with Dave Lindholm, Pave Maijasen, Albert Järvinen and others. Since the 80’s he is known from the band Sielun veljet. Since then he has played in numerous bands including Raoul Björkenheim’s Krakatau, Halme Prospekt and Atmosfärg.

Sami Sippola is a saxophonist from Tampere, widely known in the field of jazz. He started playing the saxophone at the age of 13 under Juha Unkila at the Pori Conservatory in 1984-1988. In high school, Sippola became more and more interested in jazz music, and the bands formed with local youth slowly changed the genre to jazz, especially hard bop. With his distinctive approach in the way he carves sounds from Saxophone, Sippola started playing blues, rock, folk, reggae as well as dance music, progressive rock and world music in various ensembles. Around the time Sippola joined forces with Ville Rauhala and Simo Laihonen found Black Motor in 2005, he changed the tenor saxophone to his main instrument. As the founder of jazz trio Hot Heros and as the driving force of the jazz-rap ensemble Hannibal & Hot Heros, Sippola has stretched the boundaries of jazz and energetically brought jazz to many different audiences. Hot Heros trio has been very active in recent years, and their second album, Folk Jazz from Finland, was nominated for an emma in 2018. The group’s fourth full-length got released in May 2019, published by Eclipse Music. He also composes for theaters, dance and circus productions and films.

Ville Rauhala is best known in Jazz circles as the bassist of the Tampere -based jazz band Black Motor but his contribution is immense in the world of music. Rauhala studied double bass under Pauli Tammiaho of the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra in 1995-2007, but he also studied ethnomusicology at the University of Tampere for a few years in the mid-90s. In addition to the improvising trio Black Motor, Rauhala has performed and recorded with several other artists and bands, for example saxophonist Masa Orpana, saxophonist Petrio Nieminen, trombonist/accordionist Kusti Vuorinen, Rakka and Olmari Union. Ville’s debut album Freedom – Eight Episodes came out in November 2010. This critically acclaimed disc consists of original solo bass works that chart the no-man’s land in between composition and improvisation. In addition, Rauhala has performed and recorded with saxophonists Jorma Tapio, Masa Orpana and Petri Nieminen, trombonist/accordionist in Kusti Vuorinen’s bands and Raoul Björkenheim in Triad and continues to perform with many such genres and groups.
