Imperceptible: machine, animal, plant, stone, skull imagines becoming not as a transitory state, but as a condition. Working in sculpture and video, interdisciplinary artist Hings Lim dilates objects and technologies in order to explore interrelational subjectivities beyond the dialectics of self and other, human and nonhuman, and culture and nature. In this body of work Lim rethinks apparatuses, testing the bounds of materiality and performativity as a means of meditating upon the unfathomable past and the elusive future. Drawing upon ritual and phantasmagoria, Lim interrogates the spaces between in order to consider becoming not as a linear progression but as multiplication. A profusion of ancient and imagined objects—tools, relics, spatial maps—echo to construct the artist's version of a rhizome, but ultimately, rather than attempting to concretize the multiplication of spatiality and temporality that defines this body of work, Lim offers the ghostly as a metaphor for the concerns at the core of his practice: imperceptible unless sought.

About the Artist

Hings Lim is an interdisciplinary artist working in a range of mediums including video, image, object, performance, and situation. His process-oriented practice often probes the performativity of things to allude to the notion of becoming and in-betweenness. Coming from Southeast Asia, his work draws upon the underlying multiplicities of his cultural background as a Malaysian of Chinese descent.

Lim was born in 1989 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and is currently based in Los Angeles, United States. He received his Master of Fine Arts degree and the Performance Studies Graduate Certificate at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles in 2021, as a recipient of the USC International Artist Fellowship; and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, Malaysia in 2012. He is a recipient of the Petronas – P. Ramlee Chair’s Award in 2012 and completed the Southeast Asian Artist Residency Program at Rimbun Dahan, Selangor, Malaysia in 2018.

Visiting the Exhibition

Visitors are limited to 4 visitors in the gallery at a time.

Social distancing must be observed at all times.

Mandatory mask must be worn over the nose and mouth at all times. No neck gaiters, open-chin triangle bandanas, or face coverings with valves, mesh, or holes. This is required for all visitors over age 2 and all staff and artist.

Observe signage and markers throughout the gallery and Avoid Cross Flow of Traffic. Enter and exit through marked designated doors.
