Welcome to the Immerse in Arabic Calligraphy: Workshop & Creation event! Join us at the School of Sufi Teaching for a hands-on experience with the beautiful art of Arabic calligraphy. This in-person and online workshop will guide you through the history and techniques of this ancient art form. Learn from skilled instructors and create your own stunning calligraphy piece to take home. Immerse yourself in the beauty and tradition of Arabic script at this unique event!

This workshop is designed to cater to both beginners and advanced practitioners, offering a comprehensive journey through various styles and techniques. All in-person equipment will be provided. Online participants please see list of requirements below.

Tea and refreshments will be served after the event, followed by an optional silent Sufi meditation.

Workshop Agenda:

Presentation and Introduction to Arabic Calligraphy (15 minutes)

• Brief history and significance of Arabic calligraphy.
• Overview of different styles and their unique characteristics

Demonstration of Basic Techniques (30 minutes)

• Tools and materials: Pens, inks, brushes, paints, canvas, papers, leafing glue, and gold leaves.
• Basic strokes and shapes.
• Various techniques and tips.

Hands-On Practice (30 minutes)

• Guided practice with individual feedback.
• Creating simple compositions.

Advanced Techniques and Styles (1 hour)

• Exploration of complex forms and styles such as Diwani, Thuluth, and Hur calligraphy.
• Participants choose a style to focus on.

Creating Your Own Piece (45 minutes)

• Designing a complete calligraphic piece.
• Applying learned techniques to personal projects.

Q&A and Closing Remarks (30 minutes)

• Open floor for questions and additional guidance.
• Distribution of participation certificates.

Instructor Bio:

My name is Haroon Ahmad. I am a calligraphy artist born in England and raised in Saudi Arabia. For the past 15 years, I have dedicated myself to mastering various forms of calligraphy. My extensive practice has equipped me with a deep understanding of several calligraphy styles, including:

• Ruqa’a
• Diwani
• Thuluth
• Diwani Jali
• Mualla
• Al Hur

Through this workshop, I aim to share my passion and knowledge, helping participants appreciate and develop their own calligraphic skills and a better understanding of Arabic calligraphy.
