Ishita Mili is a NJ/NY-based director, choreographer, educator, and iconoclast. Her classes provide a layered approach to globalized movement and personal storytelling. The IMGE Methodology deconstructs foundations from hip hop, bharatanatyam, house, to Mayurbhanj chhau to thread together a new and grounded approach to movement. Her intensives offer a multi-day deep dive into the historical and intuitive connections between transcultural movement, body and mental alignment, and emotive grounding to access your maximum potential. This methodology has been shared at Princeton, Gonzaga University, and local organizations across NYC, NJ, SF, TX, DC, WA, UK and India.
Shivani grew up in southern California and has been dancing across styles for over 10 years. She began her training and performance journey in Kathak under Smt. Anjani Ambegaokar (Orange County, CA). She soon expanded her training to include contemporary, modern, and street styles - earning a minor in Dance and Performance Studies at UC Berkeley, competing on hip-hop dance teams Groove Against the Machine (Oakland, CA) and 220 (San Diego, CA), and completing the pre-professional training program at Broadway Dance Center (New York, NY).
Shivani has been a company performer on IMGE for the last 2 years. Through IMGE, Shivani has performed in Broadway Bares and Indowarehouse concerts, featured on Vogue and Vanity Fair, assisted a university residency at Gonzaga University, and more. She also teaches IMGE collab workshops with Sang and hosts pop-up choreography workshops in NYC.
Dance (“image”) is an genre-blurring dance company founded by Ishita Mili that unravels traditional forms from Indian and American classical, folk, street styles, and contemporary to reinvent how movement connects our experiences. Their work is a global patchwork of vivid imagery, mudra storytelling, and global soundscape. Ishita’s work has reached inter/national stages (New Victory Theater, Lincoln Center, Kala Ghoda Arts Festival), commercial campaigns (NBCuniversal, IndoWarehouse), and theater (Broadway Bares, Asolo Rep’s “Hair”). Ishita was awarded Artist of Exceptional Merit by the Asian American Arts Alliance was granted a Folk Arts Apprenticeship from the NJ State Council on the Arts. IMGE was most recently awarded a CUNY Tribeca production residency for their original show “(no)man” and Ishita is currently a LabWorks ’24-’25 Artist at New Victory Theater.
