This year’s Carnall Award will go to Cloud and Accucilia Maboudi who have been working with young people in Zimbabwe to bring a message of peace to a new generation through sport and poetry.
Cloud and Accucilia‘s peacemaking partnership is proof that small actions for peace can be transformative even during times of war. To mark the award, we bring you a night of poetry with a message of hope for peace.
It's so easy to be overwhelmed by the wars in Palestine, Ukraine and around the world just now. For this reason we want to celebrate these small acts for peace which are bringing hope and healing. Join us to celebrate peacemakers around the world and to reaffirm our commitment to working for peace in our own lives and communities, locally and globally.
As we listen to these stories and poems we hope it awakens our imaginations anew, providing us with vision and hope to work for peace and justice in times of war.
Featuring:
- Cloud and Accucilia Maboudi who will speak about their work with young people in Zimbabwe promoting peace, and share peace poems from the poetry writing competition they set up
- Mark Birkett who will talk about P&J’s new peacebuilding projects working with young people
- Peace poetry from members of Scottish PEN , an organisation fighting for the right to freedom of expression for poets and writers across the world
- Peace songs sung by Eileen Penman (further musicians tbc)
- Chaired by Dr. Lesley Orr, honorary fellow of the Centre for Theology and Public Issues, University of Edinburgh
Please note that there will be a small bookstall selling poetry and peace books, that will accept CASH ONLY.
About the Award
The Carnall Peace Award is an annual event that is organised to coincide with the UN International Day of Peace. It was set up to remember Elisabeth and Geoffrey Carnall, who were renowned for their gentle and generous Quaker hospitality, and founded the Peace & Justice Centre in 1980.
